MSc research position: Postglacial peatland formation and landscape
evolution in the Wicklow Mountains
We are seeking applicants for a fully-funded two-year research MSc to join the Research
Ireland-funded project ‘Improving models of future ice-sheet and sea-level change through
assessing the (in)stability of the former British-Irish Ice Sheet’. This student will be enrolled
as a Geography postgraduate in the School of Natural Sciences at Trinity College Dublin,
Ireland. The deadline for applicants for this position is 06 July 2026.
Project Background
The stability – or instability - of Earth’s large ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland is one of
the greatest sources of uncertainty in future sea-level projections. One way to address this
uncertainty is to assess the response of Earth’s ice sheets to past instances of warming.
Ireland was, during the las ice age, covered by an extensive ice sheet that receded as global
temperatures warmed. Although the ice is now gone, it left behind evidence of its decay on
the landscape. This evidence includes sedimentary landforms, moulded bedrock, and
‘erratic’ boulders which dot the Irish landscape. Through mapping and dating these glacial
features, this project will improve our understanding of past ice sheet change in Ireland and
provide key data for ice sheet modellers while yielding new insight into the history and
evolution of Ireland’s postglacial landscape.
