The Role

JBA are looking to recruit the right people to work at one of the leading suppliers of specialist hydromorphology and flood risk management services in Ireland. Our existing teams support a range of clients including local authorities, LAWPRO, Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Office of Public Works, community-led environmental organisations (e.g., Tidy Towns), developers, and international organisations such as the World Bank to deliver a range of hydromorphology / fluvial geomorphology, nature-based solutions, climate change adaptation and environmental management studies. This role can be based at one of our locations in Dublin or Limerick.You’ll be joining an established environmental and engineering consultancy who put sustainability and resilience to climate change at the heart of our company strategy. Your role

This exciting role offers the opportunity to be involved in projects across Ireland and internationally, including:• River condition assessments • River restoration • Modelling and assessment of catchment hydrology and river processes• Environmental Impact Assessment (water and river processes)• Disaster Risk Management and Strategic Investment Planning in an international context.


The team member we’re looking for

We are looking for a candidate who:• Has a technical background in Earth Science, General Science, or Physical Geography.• Has a strong conceptual understanding of catchment processes (e.g., hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, soils, geology). • Shares our keen interest in helping our clients identify effective ways to improve environmental condition and manage risk. • Displays initiative and has effective communication skills.• Has strong critical thinking skills. • Is interested in doing fieldwork.

Qualifications

The right candidate will have:• A degree in an environmental science, physical geography or related discipline, or equivalent, (Minimum Level 8) and experience in a specific environmental area such as Geography, Fluvial Geomorphology; Disaster Risk Management; Geology, Earth Science.• Graduate member of a relevant institute (e.g. CIEEM, CIWEM or RGS), or working towards membership.• Some level of professional work experience.

Essential attributes for the role

• Effective technical report writing skills.• Comfortable working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams to deliver the large and complex commissions.• As a bonus the following additional experience would be beneficial:o Knowledge and awareness of planning process and policy.o Experience in using several data sets to critically evaluate environmental change, ideally across multiple spatial scales.o Experience critically evaluating the relative benefits/disbenefits of different management interventions.

Desirable attributes for the role

Given the nature of the role, it would be advantageous if candidates have an understanding in some of the following areas:• Practical understanding of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), Floods Directive, Nature Restoration Law and Habitats Directive.• Experience of wider environmental and sustainability issues.• Principles and techniques of river restoration and/or Nature-based Solutions.• Knowledge of remote sensing techniques.• River and catchment management in the context of international development and humanitarian needs.
